Course Description

Learning to communicate in another language takes practice. American Sign Language is the language used by the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Students in this course have the opportunity to learn the basics of American Sign Language, including fingerspelling, ASL vocabulary, emergency signs, counting, and how to communicate everyday needs. Students also explore communication behavior, including facial grammar and body shifting. Students will examine the origins of sign language and develop an understanding of the Deaf community.

Admission Requirements

  • Have one of the following:
    • High school diploma;
    • GED Conferred; or
    • Collegiate transcript including 12 or more credits completed as a degree-seeking student
  • Unofficial transcript(s) from institution(s) with accreditation recognized by Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or US Department of Education. Unofficial transcripts must include the name of the institution, student name, grades earned, credits earned, degree earned (if applicable), course names/numbers and dates of attendance
  • In addition to meeting the above criteria, candidates must also meet at least one of the following:
    • Be 21 years of age or older;
    • Be less than 21 years of age with 12 quarter credit hours of college credit;
    • Be active military or a veteran (must provide documentation of service)
