Description

Your drive to make a positive change in your life and the lives of others brought you to Walden University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Reaching your potential as a graduate student in social work requires active, ongoing reflection and a mindful commitment. This course provides an opportunity to focus on the full journey of becoming a graduate student.

At each step, you consider your accomplishments and challenges in the context of skills that can help you succeed. This course includes activities to help you engage with feedback, set goals, manage time, and communicate effectively—all of which you will put to work as a social work graduate student at Walden.

This is a three-week course, and you should expect to spend five to seven hours per week completing activities and assignments.

Learners registered for the course will be non-matriculated School of Lifelong Learning learners and will not have full access to University resources and centers.

In this course, you will:

  • Reflect on how previous academic challenges and successes prepare you to be a successful social work graduate student
  • Determine how you will apply learning from this course to meet the goal of becoming a graduate social work student
  • Reflect on what it means to be a graduate social work student
  • Review Instructor feedback on an essay
  • Analyze time management strategies relevant to a graduate student
  • Analyze goal-setting strategies relevant to a graduate student
  • Apply revision strategies to writing
  • Participate in online Discussions
  • Review features of a typical Walden University classroom
  • Analyze the role of community in an online classroom
  • Revise an essay based on Instructor feedback

Curriculum

  • Week 1

Receive specific, targeted feedback on your letter to the admission committee, with the goal of refocusing it to answer the question: “How do I see myself as a graduate social work student?” Participate in activities to explore how goal-setting and time management skills can help you succeed.

  • Week 2

Participate in an online Discussion to build community with your fellow students, and engage in activities to help you reflect on your writing process.

  • Week 3

Preview some features of the Walden online classroom, find out about student support services, and participate in an online Discussion that more closely resembles those found in a Walden graduate course. Then, submit your final written assignment to achieve your completion certificate.
