Christie Jenkins, PhD, LPCC-S, NCC presents this pre-recorded 90 minute webinar. Research shows that the LGBTGEQIAP+ community experiences disparities in some key areas as it relates to interpersonal violence. Social justice–based interventions are best poised to make the biggest impact for this population. As counselors, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for the most vulnerable populations. As agents of change, we have to be culturally affirming. We need to not only advocate for our own clients but involve counselors in social change at the local, state, and national levels.

Faculty Bio

Christie Jenkins

Dr. Christie Jenkins has been working in the social service field for over 25 years. She began working in domestic violence safe houses as a child advocate, life skills trainer, crisis intervention specialist and court advocate. She has been working as a counselor for over sixteen years and is independently licensed in two states and has a supervisory designation in the state of Ohio.

She has been the CEO, Associate Director, and Supervisor for the Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center and The Children’s Advocacy Center. She has over 16 years of experience working with a vast array of clientele in inner city Toledo. She has presented locally, at the state and national levels on various topics affecting counselors and their clients. She is also very active in professional organizations for counselors. Her primary research interests are in Animal Assisted Therapy and domestic violence.

She was awarded the Public Policy and Legislation Award from the Ohio Counseling Association (2017). She was also awarded the Counselor Educator of the Year (2017) by the Ohio Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. She was awarded the Innovation and Excellence Award for Excellence in a Large Non-profit and honored by the Ohio Senate for this work. She was previously awarded the Ohio Counselor of the Year (2014) award by the Ohio Counseling Association and the 2012 Clinical Supervisor of the Year and the 2012 Clinical Counselor of the Year from the Northwest Ohio Counseling Association. In 2015, she was the President of the Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. In 2016, she was the President of the Ohio Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling.

She has been the President of the Ohio Counseling Association's Political Action Committee and the Ohio Mental Health Counseling Association. She is currently the Past-President of SAIGE Ohio and the President-Elect of the national SAIGE. She is the Faculty Co-Advisor for LGBTQ+ PRIDE at Walden. She has also been awarded with the Commitment to Social Change Award this year.

Accreditation

Walden University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 4546. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Walden University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Successful completion of this micro-course provides 1.5 NBCC clock hours; partial credit will not be offered.
