Description

Depressants, stimulants, and opioids are three of the most common types of illicit substances misused today. As a social worker, you are likely to work with clients impacted by substance use disorder of one of these types of substances.

Knowledge of the chemical compounds in depressants, stimulants, and opioids is the first step in treating a population that uses drugs and alcohol in a destructive way. In this micro-course, you will learn about the different types of depressants, stimulants, and opioids; their effects on the mind and body; and their associated risks with use and misuse. You will develop an understanding of substance use disorders by being introduced to drug categories of depressants, stimulants, and opioids and the impact of these illicit substances on people's lives.

What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion of this micro-course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the significant categories of addictive substances: depressants, stimulants, and opioids
  • Describe widely used depressants, stimulants, and opioids
  • Identify forms of use, potential effects of use, and potential consequences of use of depressants, stimulants, and opioids
