Grant writers are often in high demand for nonprofits and organizations hoping to raise money for important causes in their communities. Being able to write a successful grant proposal involves not only finding an opportunity that is the right match for you and a funding agency, but the ability to write a compelling proposal that clearly establishes the need for the grant. This requires a grant writer to pack a lot of information into a concise narrative, following all the funding agency’s requirements in a digestible and engaging manner.

Effective grant writing requires strong research and analytical skills, as well as strong writing skills. This micro-course introduces a knowledge base for honing your grant writing skills for concision, clarity, and precision, with your audience in mind and provides resources for cultivating relationships and ensuring accountability in the grant writing process.

Faculty Bio

Heidi Rivers Marshall, Ed.D.

Dr. Heidi Marshall is Core Faculty for the Office of Academic Support, where she teaches the University's Dissertation Workshop courses. She holds her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education and Adult Learning from Walden University and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Writing from Hamline University. Dr. Marshall began her work with Walden in 2007 as an instructor for the Writing Center. Since then, she has worked in numerous capacities supporting adult online learners both at Walden and at other institutions. Among other initiatives, she helped launch Walden's Peer Mentor Program and served as the Associate Director for the Academic Skills Center before transitioning to her role as Core Faculty.

Curriculum

Getting Started with Grant Writing - Part 1
Part 1 includes understanding how to identify an appropriate funding opportunity, learning to write a compelling concept paper and initial proposal that establishes the need and describes the purpose and scope, and learning how to revise your narrative for concision, cohesion, and flow.
Getting Started with Grant Writing - Part 2
Part 2 includes enhancing your understanding of identifying and working with funders, as well as building and cultivating relationships; ensuring accuracy, accountability, and sustainability in your proposal; and honing your writing for audience, concision, clarity, and precision.
