The opioid pandemic has placed a spotlight on safe prescribing and the need for evidence-based practice like never before. This webinar will address disparities between managing pain-related disorders and caring for patients. Learn about the importance of comprehensive pain assessments, analgesic types and how they relate to patient pain types, appropriate opioid dosing, ongoing assessments for opioid prescriptions, management of adverse effects related to opioids, guiding principles of prescribing, substance use disorder, pain-management contracts, and the stigma associated with controlled substances. Faculty Bio

Jessica Bland, Ph.D.

Dr. Jessica Bland received her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Missouri State University in 2020. She has served as a core didactic and clinical faculty member in Walden University’s adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner program since January 2024. She became an adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner in 2015, and she received advanced certification as a hospice and palliative nurse (ACHPN) in 2020. She holds numerous advanced practice and nursing state licensures, which include Arkansas, Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, & West Virginia.

As an advanced practice provider, she has practiced in primary care, inpatient, and outpatient palliative care, as well as a nationally traveling provider. She has taught in higher education since 2016 with experience as a doctoral and masters lead faculty, doctoral project chair, clinical supervising faculty, preceptor mentor, regional clinical education manager, clinical documentation specialist, lead palliative facilitator, lead subject matter expert, and extensive experience with programmatic, curriculum, and course development. She has a marked passion for palliative care education and encouraging others and completed a scholarly project regarding a supportive intervention for families and caregivers of palliative care patients.
