Effective patient advocacy can ensure patient-centered care and improve healthcare outcomes. This micro-course is designed to equip working nurses, nursing leaders, and nursing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective advocates for their patients and to actively participate in shaping healthcare outcomes.

This micro-course will teach nurses in the workplace, in management/leadership, and students what Patient Advocacy is and how to engage as an effective patient advocate to optimize the health of patients.

What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion of this micro-course, you will be able to:

  • Explain what patient advocacy is and what a nurse's role is in advocating for patients
  • Advocate for and with patients and their families
  • Promote patient safety and quality care which includes the following: protecting patients, being patients' voice, providing quality care, as well as educating patients.
  • Describe health equality and the principles of DEI / Cultural sensitivity
  • Explain ethics considerations related to patient advocacy.
  • Understand the process of becoming a certified Patient Advocate
  • Advocate for legislation that promotes patient safety and quality care

Criteria for Obtaining Contact Hours

This micro-course contains one module. Module content includes overviews and descriptions, engagement activities, resources, and a final assessment. Within 180 days of the course purchase date, follow these steps to claim contact hours:

  1. Read a minimum of 80% of the content in each module,
  2. Complete all activities,
  3. Correctly answer at least 80% of the assessment quiz items
  4. Complete the end-of-course evaluation, and
  5. Download and print or save your contact hour certificate.
