Prof. Lum’s presentation aims to investigate the factors that contributed to the unprecedented natural disaster in Lahaina, Maui in October 2023, and to explore the planning structures, current efforts, and plans for rebuilding. Additionally, Prof. Lum will incorporate personal insights, conversations, interviews, and in-depth knowledge of Lahaina to provide a comprehensive analysis of the situation and its broader implications, particularly regarding input and concerns from the Native Hawaiian population of West Maui.

Faculty Bio

Professor. Jason Lum

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Professor Jason Lum’s academic and professional expertise encompasses a wide range of public policy issues, including the interrelationships between local, state, and federal agencies in policy coordination. He has taught with Walden for over twenty years. Prof. Lum previously served as a policy assistant to former Hawai’i Governor Benjamin Cayetano (D) and a legislative assistant to former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawai’i). He has deep knowledge of Maui County and lost several lifelong friends during the 2023 Lahaina Fire – the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over a century. Prof. Lum also served as a federal civil rights attorney and a law clerk at the U.S. Department of Justice. Lum is the recipient of the Harry S Truman Scholarship and the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and was a national finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.
