Description

The AI for Nurse Leaders certificate prepares nurse leaders to understand, evaluate, and guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence within healthcare organizations. Delivered through two self‑paced microcourses, the certificate builds a strong foundation in core and generative AI concepts, including how AI systems are developed, trained, and deployed, and the ethical, legal, and governance considerations that shape their use in clinical and operational settings.

Learners then examine applied use cases relevant to nursing leadership—such as AI‑enabled documentation workflows, decision support tools, quality improvement initiatives, workforce planning, and data‑informed management—while developing the leadership competencies needed to assess risk, ensure equity, and align AI adoption with organizational goals. Graduates of the certificate emerge prepared to make informed decisions, lead interdisciplinary teams, and support the ethical, effective integration of AI in ways that strengthen nursing practice, patient outcomes, and healthcare system performance.

Curriculum

  • Micro-Course 1 - Foundations

This course introduces learners to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) and its practical applications across the nursing profession including at the bedside, the charge desk, or in the nurse manager's office. Whether deciding how to use an AI tool in a single patient encounter or deciding whether a unit should adopt an AI tool at all, the foundations of AI literacy are the same. Therefore, learners will explore core AI concepts, understand how models learn through data training, and evaluate strategies to address ethical challenges in implementation. The course also covers generative AI and the principles of effective prompting, enabling learners to confidently apply AI tools for documentation, decision support, and knowledge management in real-world nursing and leadership contexts.

  • Micro-Course 2 - AI Applications for Nurse Leaders

This course guides nurse leaders through the transition from individual artificial intelligence (AI) awareness to organizational‑level leadership, implementation, and oversight of artificial intelligence in healthcare settings. Learners explore practical AI applications across clinical and operational workflows while shifting focus to leadership responsibilities such as ethical AI governance, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance, vendor oversight, and procurement decision‑making. The course introduces Team‑based Evaluation and Accountability Model for AI (TEAM‑AI) principles and examines how AI adoption can influence workforce and staffing equity. Learners also apply change management strategies to support safe implementation and interprofessional collaboration. By the end of this course, nurse leaders will be prepared to guide AI initiatives thoughtfully and foster a culture of responsible innovation in healthcare environments.
