Given the growing need for distance-based care, this Learning Path explores the concepts related to telehealth counseling, distance supervision, and private practice. To help ensure quality care for your clients, topics covered include an examination of the professional ethics and standards of practice, including the challenges and responsibilities supervisees, counselors, and supervisors face in providing telehealth counseling. Additionally, you will explore your suitability for running a counseling private practice, the steps necessary for establishing it successfully, and the business and operational factors related to running a counseling private practice.

This Learning Path provides a broad introduction to the key components of telehealth counseling, distance supervision, and private practice through real-world scenarios and interactive content providing the foundational knowledge to be a more effective counseling professional.

Upon successful completion of this learning path, you will be able to:

  • Examine ethical principles and best practices that support the effective delivery of telehealth counseling.
  • Identify challenges and examine responsibilities in offering telehealth counseling.
  • Analyze concepts and identify standards of practice of distance supervision, including its roles and responsibilities.
  • Define the role of the supervision in informed consent and examine the supervisory assessment process and how to establish supervisory relationships.
  • Determine suitability for owning and operating a counseling private practice and the factors related to establishing a successful private practice.

  • Micro-Course 1 - Telehealth Counseling: An Introduction

    In this micro-course you will be introduced to the purpose of telehealth counseling, the standards of practice that govern its delivery, and how to begin building competency in this modality of care. Given the growing need for distance-based care, you also will examine challenges and responsibilities facing providers of telehealth counseling, such as aiding in the client self-determination process, informed consent, inclusion, and other factors that must be considered to ensure appropriate care.

  • Micro-Course 2 - Distance Supervision: An Introduction

    In this micro-course you will explore concepts in distance supervision, including its purpose and the professional ethics that govern its practice. With the focus on providing optimal client care and supervisee skill building in counseling, you examine the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor and supervisee in an effective supervisory relationship and how it relates to meeting the needs of clients and supervisees.

  • Micro-Course 3 - Private Practice: An Introduction

    In this micro-course, you will explore your suitability and the steps necessary for establishing and running a successful counseling private practice. You will also examine the business and operational factors related to running a counseling private practice.
