As an educator, recognizing and understanding trauma is crucial to delivering appropriate and meaningful educational experiences. Learners with past or current trauma can find it interferes with their ability to learn. In this micro-course, you will explore ways to recognize trauma in the classroom. You will also learn how to develop strategies to meet the unique learner needs of individuals coping with trauma.

What You Will Learn

Define and recognize events considered trauma in the lives of students.
Understand and articulate why trauma can be a powerful force in any learning environment.
Identify ways trauma may manifest in learning environments.
Analyze personal interactions with trauma.
Develop one or more strategies for meeting learner needs when they have experienced, or are experiencing trauma.

Amy E. White, Ph.D

Amy E. White, Ph.D. serves as an academic program coordinator in the Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership at Walden University. She began her career as a K-12 teacher in Texas, teaching both music and social studies. Dr. White has facilitated the learning of teachers at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Her research interests include social justice, learner centered curriculum, and mentoring students in an online environment. She has conducted research focused on social justice in the field of education, including the phenomenon of re-segregation of southern schools, and the effects of standardized testing on the process of learning to read. She has a number of publications and national paper presentations. She is the Editor for the Journal of Educational Research and Practice, and serves on the Improvement Team of two public schools. Dr. White has spent more than 20 years in the educational field putting the needs of students first.
