In Project Management for Healthcare Settings, you will examine this strategic nature of project management and how it applies to the management of projects in healthcare environments, where the dynamic landscape calls for healthcare organizations and institutions to continually find ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations while positively impacting health outcomes.

You will explore fundamental concepts of project management such as project life cycles; project management methodologies; and the management of project scope, schedules, costs, and risks. You will view each of these topics through the lens of a project manager for healthcare projects, which have unique characteristics that warrant specific approaches. No project management experience is necessary. Instead, your curiosity about how to effectively lead project endeavors will help you learn to apply general project management concepts to healthcare project practice.

    What exactly is a project, and what do project managers do? How does project management change when conducted within healthcare environments? This micro-course presents answers to these and other fundamental project management questions. You will examine the nature and characteristics of projects, including those within healthcare settings, and the roles of project managers in leading these projects.

  • Micro-Course 2 - Project Management Approaches and Methods

    No two projects are exactly alike, and hence approaches to different projects can vary. These approaches—or methodologies—are often dictated by the nature of the project or its environment. Like different recipes for the same dish, different project methodologies may call for different “ingredients” to effectively deliver a finished product. This micro-course presents a review of the more popular project management methodologies, including those most suitable for typical projects in healthcare settings.

  • Micro-Course 3 - Project Management and Value Delivery

    Organizations invest in projects with the intent of receiving value, which may be defined in monetary terms (such as profit) and/or relative terms (such as customer satisfaction). Historically, project success has been defined by the ability to deliver on time, on budget, and within scope. But organizations are also becoming increasingly aware of the need to align projects with strategic objectives and deliver value. In this micro-course, you will examine the concept of delivering organizational value through projects, including those in healthcare settings.

  • Micro-Course 4 - Project Management Details: Scope, Schedule, and Cost

    Managing a project requires more than organization skills. To ensure a project is successfully completed, project managers must understand various characteristics of that project. In this micro-course, you will explore these characteristics. You will examine the importance of defining a project’s scope and managing a project’s schedule and costs.

  • Micro-Course 5 - Managing Risk

    Projects are risky business. Multiple risks await every project. Among the many jobs of a project manager are activities designed to identify, plan, and mitigate the effects of risk. In this micro-course, you will examine the various types of risks—from those associated with project selection through those associated with project closure. You will also examine the activities project managers engage in to identify a project’s risks, plan for those risks, and develop mitigation strategies.

  • Micro-Course 6 - Project Performance Management

    Like any other initiative, projects have goals. To ensure these goals are achieved, progress must be monitored, and corrective action taken as needed. In this micro-course, you will examine how project managers assess and report the performance of their projects. In doing so, you will review the common metrics used to measure project performance, including Planned Value (PV), Cost Variance (CV), and Schedule Performance Index (SPI).
